FAQ

Questions, answered plainly

What's the difference between Exome and Genome?

Exome sequences the exon regions directly - about 1-2% of the total genome, covering up to ~22,000 protein-coding genes - including the regions responsible for most known disease-linked variants. Genome sequences your entire genetic code, coding and non-coding alike, for the most complete and future-proof dataset.

Do you provide raw data so I can run additional analysis in the future?

Yes - Tunio provides your raw sequencing data in standard formats at no additional charge: FASTQ and VCF with Exome, and FASTQ, VCF, and BAM with Genome.

Is this a medical diagnosis?

Every Tunio report is generated and reviewed by a genetic specialist, based on results run at our partner lab - ISO- and CAP-accredited, and CLIA-certified. Variant classification follows ACMG guidelines. Reports are for informational purposes only and are not a substitute for clinical genetic testing or a doctor's diagnosis. If we flag something significant, we'll tell you plainly and recommend confirming it with a physician or genetic counselor.

How is my sample collected?

At home, with a saliva collection tube included in your kit. It takes about five minutes - no blood draw and no appointment needed. Full instructions are included, and a prepaid return label is in the box.

How long until I get my results?

Typically 5-8 weeks for both Exome and Genome, measured from when the lab receives your sample. You'll get email updates at each stage.

Why does it take up to 8 weeks, and how is the price still this good?

Your sample is sequenced as part of a full production batch, not processed individually the moment it arrives. Samples are pooled weekly rather than run daily, so a complete batch is ready before sequencing begins. It's a deliberate approach: our partner lab aims for the lowest possible cost per sample on every run, and that efficiency is passed directly on to you. The tradeoff is time - the full pipeline, from shipping and sample preparation through batching, sequencing, and interpretation, takes up to 8 weeks rather than starting immediately. A short wait, in exchange for a meaningfully better price.

What happens to my sample and data afterward?

Your physical sample is destroyed after sequencing is complete. Your digital data is encrypted and automatically deleted from our systems within a 30-day deletion window after your report is sent - email us anytime before then for a copy, or to request permanent deletion sooner.

Will this affect my insurance?

Genetic data protection is governed by different regulations depending on where you live. Tunio does not disclose customer data to insurers under any circumstances, and does not disclose customer data to any third party except where compelled to do so by a valid court order or judicial process. In certain jurisdictions, additional statutory protections apply - for example, the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA) prohibits health insurers and employers from utilizing an individual's genetic information in a discriminatory manner, though it does not extend to life, disability, or long-term care insurance. Individuals with jurisdiction-specific concerns should consult applicable local regulations.

Can I upgrade later from Exome to Genome?

Generally, no - you'll need to order a new Tunio Genome test. However, this depends on timing: if your request reaches us before your existing sample has been destroyed, an upgrade to Genome using that same sample is still possible. Contact us as soon as you know you'd like to upgrade.

Where do you ship?

Tunio ships to customers in United Kingdom and majority of the European countries where direct-to-consumer genetic testing is allowed without restriction. If your country isn't listed at checkout, email us - we're expanding coverage.

What if I'm not comfortable with a finding in my report?

You're never required to view every section. Sensitive categories (like certain neurological or late-onset conditions) are collapsed by default, and you can choose not to open them at all.

Who can I talk to about my results?

We can suggest a number of genetic clinics and help arrange a remote consultation with a certified genetic counselor, at your request and for an additional cost.

How exactly will I receive my results?

By email - a private link to view and download your report, not a raw attachment. The link is unique to you and stays active for a limited time (currently 7 days) for your privacy; if it expires before you've saved a copy, just email or chat with us and we'll send a fresh one. We don't yet have a customer login/portal - that's on the roadmap as we grow.
